ICloud’s free package for legacy MobileMe Users comes to a close

Following up form their previous message regarding the free 20GB storage for former MobileMe subscribers, apple has now stopped this and downgraded all non-paying users to their free 5GB plan.

Users who are currently over the free 5 GB limit following the expiration of the complimentary 20 GB will see such features as iCloud Backup, Documents in the Cloud, and iCloud Mail cease functioning until they bring their accounts under the lower 5 GB limit.

Apple replaced MobileMe with iCloud in 2011, giving paying MobileMe customers an extra 20 GB of iCloud storage as a good will gesture. The additional storage was set to be discontinued in September 2012, but Apple decided to extend the offer, giving MobileMe users another free year of extra storage.

MobileMe users given extended iCloud upgrade

Last year when Apple moved the subscription service MobileMe over to the free iCloud service, users who had subscriptions remaining where given a year of free iCloud storage over the free 5GB in line with their subscriptions as a thank you. This extra storage was due to be downgraded today back to the free 5GB plans however in a personalized email to all users and press release from Apple today we have been informed that the freebies will stay in place until September 30th 2013.

Apple said that users received either 10 GB, 20 GB, or 50 GB of additional storage — on top of iCloud’s standard 5 GB — depending on the amount of MobileMe storage the user was paying for when the service transitioned to iCloud.

The text in the email reads

When you moved your MobileMe account to iCloud, we provided you with a complimentary storage upgrade beyond the standard 5GB that comes with an iCloud account to help you with the transition. Originally, this storage upgrade was set to expire on September 30, 2012.

As a thank you to our former MobileMe members, we will continue to provide you with this complimentary storage upgrade at no charge, for an additional year, until September 30, 2013. No action is required on your part. For complete details, please read this article.

Thank you again for using iCloud,
